Lichess puzzles for tactics

16 short positions. Play the correct line. A miss leaves the board where it was.

What the trainer asks for

Each puzzle has one line. Mates must end in checkmate. Forks, pins, and skewers ask for the move that creates the tactic. If the line has a reply, the board plays that reply, then waits for your next move.

Themes are mate, promotion, fork, pin, skewer, and material. Filter with the theme menu. Hint marks the piece that should move. The score starts at 1000 on this device, rises when you solve, and drops when the move is wrong.

Lichess publishes a large puzzle set drawn from real games, and that database is separate from these 16 positions. Their puzzle storm and puzzle racer are timed drills on lichess.org. This page is a slower tactics board.

How to read a prompt

"Mate in 1" means one checking move ends the game. "Mate in 2" means your move, one reply, then the mate. Count your moves, not the opponent's. A promotion puzzle may also be mate if the new queen delivers it.

After a few mates, play a full game on the play page or inspect a position on the analysis board. Puzzle rating numbers on Lichess describe their pool. The score here is only your local tally.

Questions

Are these the daily Lichess puzzles?

No. These are a fixed set of tactics checked against the rules of chess. The official puzzle of the day is served by lichess.org.

Why did my score drop?

A move that is legal but not the solution costs 8 points. A clean solve adds 15. A solve after a miss adds 5. The number stays in local storage on this browser.
