Lichess chess you can play now

Start a standard game against a local bot. Clocks, castling, promotion, and takebacks are on the board.

What a game includes

You play one color. The bot plays the other. Easy search looks one move ahead and will miss a tactic. Medium looks two. Hard looks three, with a short capture search after that, and it will still miss lines a full engine finds.

Time controls are 5+0, 10+0, and 15+10, plus an untimed board. The number after the plus is the increment in seconds, added after you move. If a clock hits zero, that side loses on time.

The moves are written out as PGN under the board. To step through a saved game, use PGN import. To set a custom start, use the board editor and choose Play from here.

How this differs from a Lichess lobby

A Lichess lobby pairs you with another person, or with a bot account on their server. This board never connects to a rated pool. Resign, undo, and flip are local. Nothing here changes a rating on lichess.org or Chess.com.

Lichess also offers casual and rated time controls, tournaments, and correspondence. Those live on the official site. The rules of the pieces are the same: 64 squares, promotion on the last rank, and checkmate ends the game.

Questions

Can I play black?

Yes. Choose Black in the side menu. The bot moves first, and the board flips so your pieces sit at the bottom.

Does the bot use Stockfish?

No. It is a small search that runs in your browser. Hard is tougher than easy, and neither is a substitute for the Stockfish analysis Lichess ships.
