What the numbers mean

A score of +1.2 means the search likes White by about 1.2 pawns. A score of -0.6 likes Black by about 0.6 pawns. "White mates in 2" means the search found a forced mate, not a material lead. The bar is that same score, squashed so a four-pawn lead does not pin the marker to the ceiling.

Quicker search looks two moves ahead, then checks captures. Deeper looks three. Either can hang a piece in a long line. Lichess chess analysis runs Stockfish in the browser, with a multi-ply principal variation and a cloud opening book. Use that when you need a serious game review. Use this board when you want a fast read of a position you just set up.

Centipawns are hundredths of a pawn. Players still say "plus one" for +1.00. A mate score replaces the pawn number because a queen up does not matter if the king is caught.

How to bring a position here

Paste a FEN and load it. The board editor can build that FEN for you. A PGN belongs on the import page, where you step through moves instead of evaluating one diagram.

On Lichess, open a finished game and request a computer analysis if you want Stockfish comments on every move. That review stays on their site. The FEN of any diagram can still be copied into the box on this page.

Play legal moves for either color. Promotion defaults to a queen so the line does not stop for a dialog. Flip the board when you want Black at the bottom. Start position clears the diagram.

Is this the Lichess analysis board?

It is an analysis board aimed at the same job: inspect a position and ask for a move. It is not the Stockfish board on lichess.org, and it does not open your Lichess games by account.

Why does the best move change when I switch depth?

A deeper search sees tactics the short search misses. If the two depths disagree, trust the deeper one, and still treat both as practice rather than a published engine line.
